based on the known stoichiometry of central metabolism in butyric acid bacteria and the ATP yield, Papoutsakis derived equations that predicted the amount of various fermentation products. The author demonstrated that the fermentation equation obeys all constraints which are imposed by the reaction thermodynamics, ATP yield, and network topology.
