Gene-Nutrient Interactions (GNI)

General concept

This method identifies media conditions for which a gene is essential in a metabolic network. To predict these GNIs, a bi-level optimization, formulated as an MILP problem, is used to find a medium in which the WT strain can produce biomass in silico, and in which the predicted growth rate decrease is maximized following deletion of the gene. This problem can also be solved more efficiently with a heuristic coordinate descent method.
